SAN FRANCISCO AND SAN RAFAEL, CALIFORNIA – Every three years sleep apnea researchers and doctors meet to share their growing knowledge of the field. This August marks the 10th World Congress of Sleep Apnea. Attendees gather Aug. 27 through Sept. 1 at the Pontificia Universitas Lateranensis campus in Rome to discuss sleep apnea treatment and advances.
Dr. Greg Larson is a San Francisco dentist whose patients come from neighboring communities including San Rafael. He is interested in the cutting-edge technologies to be revealed at the conference. He has an extensive background in neuromuscular dentistry and sleep apnea, and he instructs other dentists on detecting sleep apnea in patients.
Patients with sleep apnea stop breathing during sleep. Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) occurs when the airway is blocked, either by relaxed throat muscles or by tongue obstruction. The National Sleep Foundation reports that sleep apnea affects more than 18 million Americans.
The World Congress lecturers represent a wide variety of countries, including Italy, Holland, Belgium, Germany, Korea, Japan, Brazil, USA and Mexico. The opening ceremony starts at 6 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 27, and a reception with the Roma Mayor will follow.
Throughout the conference, experts will instruct peers on a variety of sleep apnea topics, including Snoreplasty Injection, VOTE Classification System, Sleep Endoscopy Versus Sleep Videofluoroscopy and Awake Versus Sedation Endoscopy.
Several topics are specific to pediatrics, such as Sleep Apnea in Children with Craniofacial Malformations, Upper Airway Evaluation in Pediatric Sleep Apnea: Drug-Induced Sleep Endoscopy, and Prevalence and Severity of OSAS in Children with and without Co-Morbidities. San Francisco’s own Dr. Eric J. Kezirian, M.D., M.P.H., will teach a course on Aug. 29 titled Drug-Induced Sleep Endoscopy in OSA.
Out of town attendees can also take this opportunity to sightsee, as the conference is within walking distance of several Roman monuments. Stroll to the Coliseum, the Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, the Roman Forum and the Fontana di Trevi. View the conference’s official program for more information.
Dr. Larson is a cosmetic dentist in San Francisco serving patients in Walnut Creek, Berkeley and Oakland, Calif. His team provides teeth whitening, veneers and relief from temporomandibular joint disorder. Sleep apnea patients generally snore and have other symptoms that affect their waking hours. If you suspect you or your loved one is suffering from sleep apnea, contact our practice for an examination. Dr. Larson treats sleep apnea patients with the help of comfortable and removable sleep appliances. These appliances allow patients to breathe normally during sleep while maintaining a strong bite.
